The great excursion (1) Gary's view: "Here's how the race played out from my perspective. After the race got underway I fell into a group of four consisting of a fellow in a white tank top, Paul Marcel, Dianna Hall and then me. At the time of the missed turn (very roughly mile 3) it was the fellow in the white tank top, Paul, Dianna and then me.

"The four of us were running on the street when Dianna realized we were off. We all did a 180 degree turn back up the street with Dianna in front, me, and then the fellow in the white tank top. Paul dropped.

"When we got back on course I fell in behind Bill Rupp and gradually worked my way up behind Mark and Gina Fennell. Dianna, characteristic of her pacing style, sped up and I never saw her again. The fellow in the white tank top never passed me after our recovery. Dennis out kicked me at the finish.

"I never saw Maggie or Kevin Young the entire race so I suspect they were behind us when we went off course and passed us while we were returning to the course.

"That's how it looked to me. This was my first ever XC race and I had a lot of fun."

The great excursion (2) Dianna's view: "I was having a great time chasing Paul Marcel and some young man through the trails and, in my exuberance for the "hunt", followed them off course several hundred yards. Gary Milliken was chasing me so, sadly, he too ended up in the street. The young man (I don't know his name) said the course monitor stationed at the bridge told him to take a left which he did (this was after the first bridge crossing). When he hit the street, he took another left and we were all heading to the start/finish line via the road. At some point, Paul and I decided we were off course. I turned and went back but I believe he and the lad decided they were finished. I told Gary when I saw him and he turned around with me. I jumped back on course a little ways behind Gina and Mark Fennel (after a few explicative - apologies to anyone who was in ear shot) and floored it with the hopes that Miss Maggie was keeping to her plan to run easy - Thank you Maggie!

Sorry that I had to take off - I had a test at 9 AM at SBCC and couldn't stay to discuss. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking with it! I had a great time regardless - it was a fun course - I wish we had more like it.

I just want to reiterate how much fun the race was this morning. I loved the course (even with our little detour) and it was a perfect day for a cross-country race. People got a good giggle when I showed up at class smelly, dirty and wet .... and still wearing my number. Test went well, by the way. I'm taking Physiology - fascinating stuff but boy is it a lot of work!"
